In July 1962, Terry received a fateful assignment from Esquire to interview Stanley Kubrick. Terry had seen Paths of Glory and The Killing in Paris, and Kubrick had just finished what would become his breakthrough film, which was, coincidentally, Lolita. The decidedly removed approach Kubrick employed to portray sexual obsession was in stark contrast to Terry’s literary playfulness with the subject. In the New York office Kubrick shared with his co-producer James Harris, Terry interviewed the director about the film.

INTERVIEWER: Now, this is an erotic film—I mean, in the sense that sexual love is necessarily treated, and is sometimes in the foreground of a dramatic scene. Do you have any particular theories about the erotic?

KUBRICK: Only that I think the erotic component of a story is best used as a sort of energizing force of a scene, a motivational factor, rather than being explicitly portrayed. . . . There’s something so inappropriate about seeing it with an audience that it just becomes laughable.
